After 24 hours of Ghana's 2016 election, a lot has happened and still happening. Some political parties have conceded defeat based on their own coalition of results coming from the various constituencies. The largest opposition , NPP, claims they have won the election base on their own coalition of results from the pink sheets (a form which carries the data of votes cast at a polling station) and has urged the incumbent leader,President John Mahama to concede and also urging the Electoral Commission(EC) to declare the results. So far no formal words have come from the President himself directly other than statement on behalf of the party made by the Spokesperson of their campaign team,Madam Joyce Bawa, urging their supporters to keep calm because they are leading the polls based on their own figures.
Series of press conferences have been held by the EC,the NPP and the NDC party(the incumbent).Around 1:00am, the NPP held its first press conference, letting the EC and their supporters to know the percentage of votes they've acquired against their main opponent,NDC, after over half of the 29000 polling station results have trooped in.With this the NPP urged the incumbent to concede defeat. The NPP also stressed on the number majority of parliamentary seats they've won against NDC.The EC also held a press conference around that time suggesting to the NPP to refrain from such acts for it could create tension in the country and also their results have not been certified by the commission yet. This didn't sit well with the opposition party and they have gone back and forth with the EC ever since.Concerns have been raised by the EC on the issue of over voting in some areas and the NDC shares the same views. There have been a mixed feeling on the part of the supporters of the two prominent parties, whether they should jubilate(the NPP supporters) or wait for the EC to sort out the over voting issue and declare them as winners to commence the amusement ; on the part of the NDC supporters , the calm nature of their party gurus which is very unusual has become a great concern for them although the over voting issue gives them a little hope.
Most of the presidential candidates who have conceded defeat have took to their facebook page to congratulated the opposition leader,Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
All eyes are on the EC now,by Law she has 72 hours to declare the winner,so Ghanaians are holding on to that and impatiently waiting for their president elect.
